 Selmer Question
Author: Howard
Date:   2024-11-21 02:27

Hi all.

Had the chance to pick up an old Selmer with matching serial numbers for $500. Great shape.

Serial numbers are K6836.

I guess the other thing I am wondering is the model name. It says "Selmer Paris) on all parts. Is it a Centered tone? Is it a Balanced Tone

Does that mean anything to anyone?

Any help appreciated.

That's from around 1927-1928 - most likely a Radio Improved.

No, it's just a "K series." Some -- including myself -- hold these as the best swing era Selmers. The bore was slightly smaller and the wood was ... woodier (?!). They are marvelous players. Treasure it.

Check the collar on the register tube. For a BalancedTone it is oval with 2 tiny screws or nails. Centered tone is usually later than a BT and the register collar is round. Never seen a Radio Improved myself.

The K series had a standard shellacked in speaker tube without the large threaded bush. I had an early BT (L series) come in for servicing which had the typical plain speaker tube.

The two piece domed speaker bush on the 55 and later BT doesn't have screws nor nails - it has two dimples in it so a special two pronged removal tool (like an oboe 8ve vent tool) could be used to unscrew or refit it. The speaker tube is push fitted into the centre of the bush - both parts being sealed with wax.

CT and Series 9/9* have a hexagonal headed speaker bush - early CTs had the larger M13 threaded bush (same thread as the late BT) and CTs sometime during the P series and then Series 9/9* had a narrower thread but with the same size hexagonal head.

Series 10 went back to using the standard smaller diameter speaker tube.
