I hope other bb members got to experience the exquisite performance of the Mozart concerto by Afendi Yusuf and the Cleveland Orchestra last night.
Mozart’s sublime work was wonderfully animated by Yusuf’s interpretation. Though prodigious technical mastery of the clarinet was clearly evident, it was revealed through seemingly effortless lyrical and graceful playing. Perfectly tasteful, unhindered by any urge to show off through over-ornamentation or excessive tempos.
The restatement of the adagio theme after the brief, elegant cadenza was just a whisper, but a whisper with the same rich, lush tone that was characteristic of Yusuf’s sound through the performance. Just astounding. And the Clevelanders, under Nicholas McGegan, wonderfully matched that sonority. I’ve never heard anything quite like it. Absolutely gorgeous.
