Starting with your last question, I blow the same amount of air double lip as I do single lip.

It isn't surprising that different players have different approaches to playing. Sometimes the way you blow is context-dependent. You don't play as loud as possible (which, incidentally is fortissimo in Italian) in a woodwind quintet.
It's hard to imagine that your teacher in high school plays fortissimo all the time. either, although he may have emphasized it with you.

Well, blowing your brains out would certainly affect your sound.

Ideally, you should blow in a way that's musically appropriate for what you're playing and where you're playing it. You need to apply some situational awareness and taste. I wouldn't ask friends what they think at all. You need to play in a way that makes you musically comfortable.
