Although I haven't actually used mine very much (in favor of much heavier "grown-up" clarinets), I would recommend the Lyons highly to a young beginner. It is much lighter than standard clarinets; is all in one piece, so assembly is not a concern; and being in C makes it more practical/versatile than the Eb Kinderclarinets that are the closest alternative. It actually has a nice tone to my ears, and is virtually indestructible. On the downside, it is limited in alternate fingerings and by having a fixed mouthpiece, so your child will probably outgrow it in a few years. But then you'll now better what to do for the long term. As I recall, I had to order mine from the manufacturer overseas, and have heard of no U.S. distributor yet. Good luck,
Nelson H.
