How far are you from the tech? When I had my bass clarinet overhauled and modified a few years back, the 1,000 km round trip was a long, but manageable and worthwhile one day drive. It avoids the whole shipping risk, especially that of a perfectly regulated instrument being knocked out of adjustment on return shipping. But, the biggest advantage is being able to play test the instrument on pickup, while with the tech, so any little adjustments for preferences can be made.
Of course, there is the consideration that the replacement cost of a lost or severely damaged bass clarinet would be significantly higher than £2,500, and the anatomy of a bass clarinet perhaps makes it more susceptible to adjustment issues caused by rough handling. In your case mailing may be worth the risk.
