There are just too many clarinet sounds and words that miss the mark when you try to apply them. What words can describe the sounds Jimmy Hamilton gets in his solo on Ellington's Caravan? The intense coloration of the clarinet strikingly contrasts with the sound of Juan Tizol's valve trombone, but who can say exactly how or why or what bright, dark, or covered would have to do with it?
