 Bettoney Clarinet
Author: Roman Eller

Hi! I just bought a Harry Bettoney Boston Massachusetts clarinet and I don't know what's it made of or how old it is. I have been trying to find websites with serial numbers but all I get is Cundy-Bettoney not H. Bettoney. The serial number is 7849. I got this of ebay and it came from the store Phillip Werlein Ltd. Please, anybody out there, please give me some information on this mysterious instrument. Thanks
Roman Eller

If it's a Boehm-system clarinet (LP or "Low Pitch"), it's probably 1920s-vintage, possibly as late as early '30s.

Hi Roman - You have a quite good clarinet, made by a well-respected maker of the 1920-40's era . I have a wood, H Bet marked USN, # 4166, it plays as well as its competition of the time, Pedler, Pruefer, G W Bundy etc. In looking for late 1800's cl sheet music with piano, I found some pieces printed by Cundy, so I am assuming "he" was a music store-publisher, in some form of business with Harry B. {HELP, please] If yours is a metal, look for the "Silva-Bet" marking, they were among the very best [of a generally poor lot] of "student" cls of that era. I have several copies of an 1950's woodwind magazine with well-written articles by H B on cl design and characteristics. Luck, Don

Roman -

If your H. Bettony is metal, you could be in luck. At least some of these were solid silver. (I have a silver H. Bettony Eb.) Check the 4 large pads at the bottom. On my Eb, they are held on by a screw, like flute pads.

If it came with an H. Bettony mouthpiece, it's probably a Chedeville blank that, in decent condition, could be worth more than the entire instrument.

Best regards.
