The 1180 is a downgrade from a Yamaha. Yeah the wood is nice but they’re just so stuffy (especially in the upper register) and the mechanism for the register vent is unreliable at best. Normally I love Buffet basses (I play an older Prestige) but the 1180 model is just not a good instrument IMHO.
The main issue lies with the fact that it has a single register vent. If you are looking for an upgrade you want something with a double register vent mechanism. You may also want a low C. Given this I can recommend 2 models that have these features and cost less than the 1180:
1) Kessler Custom Low C Bass clarinet. The body is synthetic but these are great players. Great response and good intonation throughout
2) Royal Polaris. At $6800 it’s $50 cheaper than the Buffet yet has all the features of the pro Buffet models costing double. Has a wood body, silver keys, right pinky low D key and an adjustable neck.
