Re: Looking for Ivory ring/ferrule for Barrel

You're best looking for an old ivory billiard ball and having a replacement socket ring machined from that.

Although there are some very convincing substitutes made from cast polyester resin, complete with Schreger lines. If I were to make a new socket ring, I'd fit a brass or nickel silver ring for strength (or even a carbon fibre or kevlar band), then hide that with a decorative ivory or artificial ivory socket ring over the top of it as neither ivory nor composites on their own will have the strength to successfully reinforce sockets. I've seen recorders where the ivory mouthpiece has split and that's a pretty thick-walled piece of ivory.
