One impediment to opening the "A" key may be thinking of the movement as "a roll." We CAN'T roll our fingers. What we do is either a "nudge" off the medial side of the left index finger or just move it laterally up to the "A" key (if our hand position is more perpendicular to the horn). Either way, the movement is lateral and toward the thumb.



I isolate a practice (sans clarinet) by taking my left hand, fingers slightly bent (as if ready to play piano) finger tips upon a surface and then move my index finger laterally back and forth. I do this slow, fast, rhythmically, non-rhythmically, or even like a "flick" toward the thumb.
