As far as I know, they all come from the factory with the serial number on both upper and lower joints. I have replaced upper joints. The last time I did this the shop in Jacksonville offered to put the same serial number on for me. I don't know how long they have had this capability.

It is less common to need a lower joint replaced. If the clarinet was purchased as a new clarinet, perhaps there was an accident before it was purchased or a defect was discovered and the lower joint was replaced.

If it was purchased used the lower joint might even be from a different make or model.
