What does it mean when a clarinet hasn't a serial number?

I'm interested to buy a Buffet e-flat clarinet for the modest sum of 350 euros-second-hand of course. It has no serial number. What does that mean? I have in my collection an excellent Leblanc B-flat and the reason it has no serial number is because it is a prototype (the keys are neither nickel nor silver-plated).
