Hi everyone

I recently bought a Henri Selmer “A” - Mouthpiece and a Pichard Paris France - Ebonite SM Mouthpiece for my b flat clarinet.

I’ve been told they are both vintage and the Selmer is supposedly a rare one due for it being an A however I can’t really find anything helpful online and hoping someone here can shine a light on these mouthpieces.

I have a Pichard clarinet. They were a Marigaux stencil. Also have the Pichard mpc that came with it. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the mpc. It's probably a Riffault blank.

Selmers are good but many refacers find them difficult to work on (Terry Guidetti is one).

I have a Selmer mpc facing chart and it does not include the "A." Rare indeed!!!

Bill,
The very first mouthpieces produced by Selmer (in 1920s?) had A, A*, HS, and HS* facings. The facing letters were inscribed on the bottom of the table. (The mouthpiece shown in this posting is not one of the very old ones. It is more likely from the 1950s). The A facings were those of Alexandre Selmer, and the HS facings were those preferred by Henri Selmer. They were very close for French Boehm facings--well under 0.96 mm. at the tip. Both facings were short lays, with the A being very short and very close. They play well with the "rubber band" or drawstring type low pressure double lip embouchure recommended by A. Selmer. Manuel Valerio of the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops Orchestras played a Selmer A or A* facing.

Oh Great thanks for that information.
It’s always nice knowing a little history of what you own.

"Pichard" was one of many stencil names used by the Marlene company. The mouthpieces were usually made from blanks supplied by other companies (for example Alelandais, Riffault?). If you show both inside (tone chamber) and the side of the mouthpiece where the reed sits (table, rails and window) to a mouthpiece tech, they may recognize the company that produced the blank and approximately date it.
