I'm very curious why we act like "ebay" is a dirty word on this bboard.
To the topic at hand: In my general area, all the pawn shops which existed when I was a kid are still here. Flea markets are a big deal too - everything is growing, so I'm not sure a downward trend in pawn shops is national. It defies logic since most of us seem happier to shop the various auctions/thrift stores online. Having said that, I found the pawn shops in my area to normally only carry over-priced student models of a few instruments at any given time.
I take slight issue in the characterization that "...pawn shops depended on a certain amount of traffic in stolen merchandise..." - around here, the pawn shops are held to a very high standard and work with the police if anything fishy is going on. The last thing our local pawn shops want to deal with is stolen property - because in the end, it is the pawn shop which is commonly caught short in such a deal.
