Hello all and special thanks to Bob, MRSax & Don for their comments here. This has all been very interesting and helpful. To make a long story short, I now have an R13 and an S1, both from the mid, late '70s. The S1 has an F prefix for the French diapason.
They are both lovely instruments, came to me well maintained,, beautiful wood, smooth bore, easy to play and very consistant, probably the biggest thing I notice in comparison with my other instruments. The S1 is most beautifully in tune and just sails right over the break right on up.
When I compare them and my other favorite, my CT (P series), they are all different and they are all a pleasure to play.
But after playing a while, there is something very special that happens with the S1 that is unique and hard to describe, it seems to become easier to play and more nuanced, more expressive. This isn't just warming up. It's quite a surprising feeling as I'm not at all a good or experienced player. It's like the instrument is really working with me. And so, despite starting out with a more concentrated sound compared say to the CT, I feel like I arrive at a huge, flexible yet incredibly sweet sound volume that I can do a lot more with. The R13 also has some of this but is (for the moment) less well in tune and while it does have some of the shimmer of the S1, it does not have that magic that seems to grow on you.
VoilĂ , what else can I say, I'm very happy with this kind of magic.
