I bought a "repair special" S1 for $530 from Saxquest...brought it to a Buffet-authorized shop (ccflutes) in Morro Bay CA...wood is solid, no repairs , just needs some minor keywork and a good overhaul...$350-$400...I've read its history and as a "jazz noodler" I was interested in Buffet's 1970s development of this horn as a "jazz" alternative to the R13. I know it sold poorly and was dropped in the 80s. From what I hear, properly fixed up, it holds its intonation pretty well and has a "brighter" sound than the R13. I had a sweet 1999 R13 for 20 years but it had two different serial numbers because the lower joint broke soon after I bought it. It had great tone but wobbly intonation...lower register was flat, throat tones were way sharp and the upper register was fairly sharp as well...
I had a Fobes mpc and used 3 Legere reeds for years of on-and-off playing...any S1 players out there suggest a mpc for this? Thanks..
