There is a Compact Disc recording that Pete Fountain did for the Ranwood Record Label in Sept 1994 called "Touch of Class" that features his mellow melodic clarinet renditions of a number of ballad standards against the backdrop of a string orchestra. Some critics missed the driving rhythm and jazz improvisation they were used to hearing from Fountain, but if you want straight lyricism and mellow tone, this is a hard to beat clarinet recording.
Hint: if you look on that famous Internet Web site you just might find a copy of "Touch of Class."
Some of the tunes he plays are La Vie En Rose, Autumn Leaves, April in Paris, C'Est Si Bon, Miss Lucy (from Paul Weston's Crescent City Suite), Mood Indigo, The Song from Moulin Rouge, Your Cheating Heart.
