One disadvantage of the s-k mechanism probably is, that the so-called flageolet fingerings in the altissimo register become impossible. I mean playing high register notes the thumb hole open. As far as i understand, the extra bb-vent is controlled by the thumb ring and the register key. Closed register key keeps the extra vent closed too. And when playing in the clarinet register the thumb keeps the extra vent closed.

The resonance fingerings give quite satisfactory results for the throat b-flat plus they aid you to more fluent legato through the break. I remember me once playing Brahms' Eb-major sonata at Alfred Prinz's master class. He blamed my throat Bb's being too loud!
