My warm-up routine on any woodwind I pick up is generally straightforward:
- start with 2-3 scale/arpeggio exercise in all 12 keys...I mix up the modes
- Play a 2-4 measure bebop line (or maybe a blues chorus) in all 12 keys.
- Sometimes something I know, sometimes I make it up on the spot and then challenge myself to remember it as I play through the key circle
- Grab a songbook off the shelf and "sight read" at tempo a couple of tunes...sometimes I get carried and away and, e.g. read through a whole Choro songbook (I have quite a few of these) in C, Bb, and Eb keys
- Work on anything that I need to prepare for an upcoming rehearsal or show
...then, whatever I feel...perhaps some 'Playalong) (canned or my own works in progress)
