Thanks!

Have you got any scrap grenadilla bits lying around?

Turn that either into powder and use with superglue to fill the holes in with, or make it into dowels and superglue them into the holes to fill them in.

While I haven't yet tried it, I wonder how well burnt/carbonised toast powder and superglue would work as a filler on grenadilla instruments?

Shellac works well same as what you use for pads, the dark type, and if you let it burn a bit it can turn black. Then use a bit of black wood as Chris suggested. You may have to heat it a lot to get this nice and even, but with care no sanding will be needed. I use one of those feeler gauges and gently heat the gauge over the filled hole with the wood and soon it will look like nothing was ever there. With shellac you can keep heating it. With Superglue you will need to sand the area and most likely it will leave a mark. You can try to buff it out but then you need a buffing wheel and all of that. So I kind of discourage superglue.

The other option is have a repairman do this. Shouldn't cost very much. If it were my client I don't think I would bother to charge, because the client would come back for something major to be repaired. This is about a 10 minute job.

I have an Artley clarinet that I draw wood dust from. When I bought it it had a severely broken tenon and several cracks. I repaired them myself and learned to play on it.For almost three years it stood by my couch as an expendable clarinet.Due to my fondness for it I find it difficult to draw wood dust from it. I hope to buy a truly hopeless grenadilla clarinet to use as a source of wood filler. An advantage of buying a fiber donor clarinet on line is that with luck and research it will come with an upgraded mouthpiece , a decent case and a decent bell and barrel. Each of these bonuses can potentially be worth more than the purchase price of the entire clarinet.

Here's a reasonably priced source of scrap blackwood.

You can probably find them cheaper if you search.

I recently got into wood turning and I see loads of these bell blanks for sale by wood merchants all over the world. Some say they are rejects from a major manufacturer. Does anyone know the story behind them? Did someone like Buffet reject a massive shipment?
