On the Mourning Pleas of Elders

There are three major social issues of concern to Amerindian Elders that can and should be addressed by music academia and the wider music community.
These issues have a major impact upon the prevailing state of decay and despair in both Amerindian and Euro-American cultures. Briefly they are , the crying need for more Spiritually Medicinal music within both realms , the tragic and unacceptable rates of burnout and career abandonment by aspiring musicians and an educational system that is too cultually insensitive and Spiritually blind.
The heart of all three problems lays within the methods and ideologies of higher education. Our system of education must be reformed. Due to the Spiritually Medicinal Power of Music the Faculties of Music are best qualified to lead the reform.
To quote one Elder " Both of our communities need Medicinal Music, we mourn and suffer from the loss of our broken spirited former musicians. Music is so much more than an acoustic presentation of mathamatics".
This post will be followed by several others within this thread. The most important ones will include short stories drawn from the real life experiences of victims and advocates.

Interesting. Musical therapy is a recognized field. It is sometimes used to treat depression. I've heard it is not confined to passive listening, but know little about it.

A harsh reality is that music is not enough, not enough to sustain life or even mental health. There are active musicians and avid music lovers who, after an unrelated crisis, turn completely away from music.

This story was told to me by the Elder quoted in the original post.
There was in our community an outstanding young man with a large healers heart. His musical talents were greatly empowered by the Spirit of our Creator. As he played and interacted with the community there was a decline in the cravings of alcoholics and drug addicts. Many were overcoming their addictions.Spouses with a history of inflicting family violence were calmed . Violence as a whole was in decline throughout the community. Our whole community began to thrive.
One day he informed the Elders he was going to the city to study music. The Elders were horriified because so many of their most promising young people were Spiritually slain by both urban life and academic influence. He assured them he was morally strong enough to resist vice and thick skinned enough to overcome criticism of his ability and his beloved instrument. When the Elders saw he could not be dissuaded they begrudgingly gave their consent.
The music room in which he practiced with other students was presided over by a neurotic bitterly critical music téacher. Her unworthy character was well known and tolerated by the rest of the faculty. Her manner was acquired by the students surrounding him . Day after day he was surrounded by bitter comments and attitudes . He was so grievously wounded by the constant criticism and contempt bestowed upon the instruments of others that he dropped out of school, retired his instrument and returned to his community as a man broken in both heart and Spirit.
With the loss of his Music and exemplary lifestyle addictions worsened , domestic and community violence increased and the community as a whole withered in decline.
These are the words she spoke after telling this true real life story. " You know our ways and beliefs". "You have moved among politicians and professors without fear and they have listened to you in the past". " You must return to them and tell this story". You must teach them that musical instruments are sacred sentient beings that are wounded by harsh words and abuse"." People that are sensitive to musical instruments are also wounded when they witness abuse". "You must teach frustrated students they only worsen their situation by abusing and speaking harshly against them, teach them to love and name their instruments as though they were family members".All I have said you must teach ".
() herein and hereafter indicates that I am adding my understanding to hopefully increase understanding of stories and quotations.
( The whole of Creation is comprised of three Divine elements, by Water their is form and substance, by Wind there is self awareness and sentience or awareness of surrounding environment and by Fire there is soul ,the capacity for choice and interaction. Every blade of grass, every grain of sand and every withering leaf in the wind is alive. If you know this and listen carefully you may be permitted to hear their songs.)
