Hello all,
After a few days of not feeling well, I went to the doctor and discovered that I have strep throat. I've been wondering this for years, because not only am I currently playing two clarinets (alto and bass) that belong to my school and have had many players on them over the years, but even in high school the bass clarinet players complained about unpleasant smells coming from the two good bass clarinets that all of them would share. This is a topic I only hear brass players talk about, and while the process for a clarinet is probably very different, I would still love to get as much information as I can get. This recent development in my health has prompted me to finally ask: what do you do to clean a clarinet?
I'm not talking about making the instrument look nice (although I'm sure that could be a side-effect), I'm talking about making sure there's nothing nasty going on in the bore. Obviously cleaning equipment (mouthpieces, swabs, not using discolored reeds, etc.) will help, but what can you do to make sure the actual instrument is clean? I'm more specifically looking for what you would use in the neck of a larger clarinet, as well as the body of any clarinet.
Thank you all.
