The length, inner diameter and bore (conical vs cylindrical) of a register tube all affect how a clarient plays in the upper register. Recently I had someone come to me claiming that they could not play a high C on their A clarinet. After checking for leaks, I diagnosed the problem as being an improperly sized register tube. I replaced it with one with an internal diameter roughly 0.1mm smaller and the difference was incredible. The customer was extremely thrilled with how well the instrument played after this modification.
I have no idea if they are actually shaped differently, but I have a hunch they are given that they allegedly make a big difference. The material on the other hand should make no difference.
