 "Super Dynaction"
Author: Avie
Date:   2005-02-08 13:50

I purchased a Buffet "Super Dynaction" clarinet 3 years ago and have found only one other SD owner on this BBoard or elsewhere since. It was mfgrd. in 1968 (F103xxx) and the other approx. in the early 70's. One of my questions is, are there any others out there? Being that they were produced in at least a 4 year span leads me to believe that there must be more in existance. If anyone knows of any other SD owners or any other infomation on the Buffet SD model positive or negative would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Mine is the other one, as avumba already knows. I think the strangest thing about this model is the protracted manufacturing span. Manufacturing one here . . . one there . . . over a span of four years seems a bit unusual. Mr. Kloc indicated in an email to me that it was a limited edition jazz model. Maybe just experimentation, rather than a full-blown production model. But these are definitely not R13's with a catchy name on them.

As you likely know, this name was applied to a series of saxaphones over the years. Perhaps they was using the name to target a market niche.

At first I thought they were just applying the name and everything else remained the same. Certainly the Super Dynaction logo would catch the eye of sax players, as the SDA saxes were and are very well regarded. But this went beyond a marketing ploy. I'd really like to fully understand what they did with this instrument, but the one's that know either aren't around anymore or aren't saying much.

Re: saxes, King [Cleveland] had their Super 20's, Selmer had their S Actions, and S Balanced Actions. On cls, some lesser-known French had Superi--- models, "always better" ??. Don

I think Buffet used the term when they produced the Evette saxes....I suspect 1920's or thirties...early Buffet/Evette saxes were actually quite good...

Hello everyone on the Super Dynaction thread - if you're still following.

I also own a Buffet Super Dynaction Bb Clarinet. The serial is F919xx. Can anyone help me date it?

Hello,

I've got Super Dynaction tenor and alto saxes and they are fabulous! If anyone has a SD clarinet and is at a convention where I am, I'd love to try the clarinet out, if you wouldn't mind.

Happy New Year, all!

I have a 1968 catalog that I got in France which lists these. The Super-Dynaction clarinets were made in the 1960's and marketed as jazz instruments but only in Europe. Buffet's other two lines were the BC-20 (classical) and Continental (chamber).

Hi Edinger,
According to the buffet serial listings your F919xx was mfgrd between 1964- 1966 but the numbers are not listed maybe because of the war years. More than likely in 1966. My Sd F103xxx was mfgrd in 1968. Because of your input we now know that the SD was made from 1966 thru 1974. There must be many others in Europe but mine and Freds are the only others that we know of here in the U.S. Only 3 SD's in eight years doesnt make any sense but where are they? Thanks for your input. We have been looking since 2003. Hopefully others will come forward in the future with information of this great long lost clarinet. Happy Tootin New Year.

Hi Ralph,
Thanks. I received your 1960's catalog of the Super Dynaction Clarinet and other models of that time. I have forwarded the catalog to Fred & Tom since they are also owners of an SD from the 60's and 70's.
We now know a little more about the SD but still dont know how many were mfgr'd! Any info by other clarinet players would be appreciated. Thank You.....ATV

Models in that 1968 catalog were not imported to the US. This catalog was for sales in Europe, and did not include models sent to the US.

I got the catalog, and was able to purchase a "Continental" model A clarinet, only because I made contact with Buffet from a country that did not have an importer, and for that reason they did not think that I was a US citizen. This became apparent after I wrote Buffet about a crack that the instrument had developed, and they sent a scathing letter back.

Buffet's Paris office was in Passage du Grand Cerf, a drive-through arcade lined with trash cans. There was a dusty, autographed photo of Benny Goodman in the window. It was August, and in traditional French fashion, the office was officially closed.

I knocked on the door, and the woman inside shouted "Nous sommes ferme". But she did let me in when I held up to the window the letter that I had received from Buffet, which said they would have a clarinet for me. "Ah, Mssr. Katz! Entre-vous, entre-vous!" She unlocked the door.

They had an impressive storage case, about 6' tall, 20' long and 3 feet deep, that was all 6" square cubbies, each with a clarinet in it, rolled up in brown paper. There was an instrument with my name pencilled on the paper. She let me play it. We discussed a case. I signed some travellers cheques in dollars; she gave me the change in francs.

The instrument was $147US in 1968. I didn't have enough cash to buy a case and still make it home. So I ended up carrying the clarinet around Paris for the next two days rolled up in that same brown paper. This sure would cause trouble now, but nobody questioned me then.

Hi All,

I have a super dynaction Buffet with F814XX serial numbers the serial numbers are different on each joint by a couple of numbers! This clarinet also has a stubbins type Bb register key mechanism, and an added vent key on the bottom f linked to the register key as in some selmer recital A clarinets. Some of this work looks as if it was completed in the factory other shows signs of perhaps another workshop's custom work. The clarinet plays very well but I have no idea of its history. I know the Buffet rep for Scotland who has tried to find out the clarinets history from Buffet with no results as yet. If we find out any more I will post the information.

To Allan Segal the barrels work really well on my selmer recitals! Thanks again.

DVB from Scotland

F964xx is from 1967 according to this site's serial number list:
http://www.woodwind.org/clarinet/Equipment/HowOld/Buffet.html

I have a F131xxx (1972 according to the same list) which is tuned like a "jazz" clarinet where the 1st register lowest tones have been sacrificed for the 2nd register to be in tune.

There were Super Dynaction saxophones as well, far more common and popular than the clarinets.

Kind of an old post, but it seems an important one. I have a Buffet SDA, F108256, 1969. Mine is gold plated, most certainly aftermarket. I also have some kind of paperwork--perhaps an insurance or warranty, dated 1970, but it's all in French. I also know that it was purchased in Paris.
