I have always like Brunner's recording of Jean Xavier clarinet sonatas. He seems to have been one of the last famous clarinet soloists with a "bright" edgy "Vandoren 2RV" tone on a Buffet that sparkles in late Baroque and early Classical pieces. Robert Gugolz in the Suisse Romande Orchestra was another. (I still listen to his Debussy Rhapsody recorded with Ernest Ansermet). A reminder of how approaches to the classical clarinet change with the times, even in the same country and the same orchestra, is Dmitry Rasul Kareyev in the Suisse Romande today, who once played Boehm clarinets but since 2011 has played mainly on Wurlitzer Oehler system instruments.
