Karl...I've noticed that myself a LOT. One of the bands I play with is full of college kids with no hearing loss. Even when I'm playing 1st clarinet, I can barely hear the conductor because he feels no need to speak loudly as almost all "the kids" can hear him without any trouble. Another band I play in is composed of almost all 60-somethings and the conductor speaks extremely loudly so everybody can hear...not good when you're sitting in the front row directly in front of him!!! Oh, to have perfect hearing once again:)
