 Help with phrasing

I have clarinet audition in a couple of weeks but I need help with figuring out where to breathe. I'm sure some of you are familiar with Rose Study #11 a couple bars of this is required for the audition (tempo is at dotted quarter equals 60). If I can't circular breathe, do you guys have any tips on phrasing? (keep in mind taking a beat to breathe would deduct points)

Which set of etudes is this? 40? 32? 20 Grand?

I took a look at no. 11 from the 32 and no. 11 from the 40, and based on what you've described, I think you're asking about the one from the 40. It's in 6/8, and it's all sixteenth notes with no rests. In contrast, no. 11 from the 32 is in 3/2 and marked Larghetto. It isn't easy, but there are places to breathe.

There's no doubt no. 11 (from the 40) is a real challenge. In my edition, Carl Fischer, the tempo is marked dotted quarter = 76. In an etude like this one, if you can't circular breathe (like you, I don't), you just have to sneak in a quick breath whenever you can. I'd suggest taking the tempo at about 76 if you're able to, and slipping in a very quick breath at the end of every four measures. If you can't make it through four measures, slip it in at the end of every second measure.

If you only have to play a few measures, you should be fine. If you have to play more of it, consider using rubato here and there if you're comfortable doing it.
