Bass clarinet stand - saga continues

Well...ok. So, this has turned into an adventure.

I ordered the K&M 15010N ($129 at the time vs. the K&M 15010 which was only $97.90).

I finally received my order only to find that I was charged for the 15010N, but received the 15010. Upon objecting to this, I was informed by the seller that the 15010N is just the nickle-plated version of the 15010, and that they are otherwise the exact same stand.

However, that's not what the pictures (nor prices) of the two products suggest. The photos of the 15010N show a cup at the bottom of the stand which is smaller, and has a slot in it. The 15010, on the other hand, has a huge cup (like the Hercules stand photos) which allows the bass clarinet to pivot hither and yon - until it finally comes to rest in a position where all the torsional weight of the bass clarinet is resting on one key or another, instead of the key-free area.

I plan to return the K&M because I was charged roughly 29% more than the listed price for the model I received. However, I'm not certain which stand to turn to. The large non-slotted cup design seems to be a problem for my bass, and I don't want to go hacking on a new $100 stand to try to make it work, but I will if I need to.

At any rate, I'd be happy to hear bass clarinet stand recommendations from happy owners if you're out there! (My bass clarinet is not setup to use a peg.)

Thanks!

Fuzzy,

My offer of a swap of my older Hercules stand that supports the instrument by the bell for the newer model with the cup (remember I used a plastic jar lid in a "cup-like" location clamping it into place) still stands. I've kept the original box and the older front member with the bell support. The stand is in new condition.

Let me know.

Hi Hank. Thanks again for the offer, but Chris P's argument against that particular design made sense to me. So, I'm hoping to find another solution.

Thanks for the offer though!

Too bad K&M discontinued their great bass stand. It has the large cup, and the back does raise to just over the G#/A throat keys. Very vesatile. I set it up in theater pits with the cup between my feet, and when bass-time comes, I just grab the bass, pull it over, and blow!

Hi Fuzzy...

I'm not sure how long of a peg you have, but I hang the peg over the edge of the cup on the Hercules stand. The cup has a grove it in where the heel of the bell rests. The cup is a medium hard rubber so it won't scratch the bottom of the bell. MUCH more stable than standing it on the peg.

Tried to attach a photo. Said it was too large. Edited version:

Tucker,

Thanks for the photo. It looks great! However, the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydWOKAznCxY&t=3m15s makes it look sorta wobbly (similar to what I experienced with the K&M 15010 (not the K&M 15010N). Have you ever had a problem with the bass spinning around like that in your Hercules stand?

Ken,

I hope I didn't confuse anyone - K&M does still make a stand model number 15010, and if you order the 15010N, you'll receive the 15010. In the older catalogs, the 15010 was listed only as a bassoon stand, where the 15010N was listed as both a bassoon and bass clarinet stand, and the cup was shaped different.

...but the K&M 15010 is still available - just be sure to order it instead of the 15010N - there's a $20-$30 difference in price, and they'll send you the 15010 either way (I've checked at two reputable nationally-known music stores, and both did the same thing to me - charged for the 15010N and delivered the 15010).

I sit my bass in the stand the same way that Tucker does, and I haven't noticed wobbling. It also avoids hitting keys on the front when placed this way.

A colleague of mine places her bass the opposite way in the stand (the back facing the yoke), and I don't believe that I've seen her bass wobble in rehearsals or anything.

Fuzzy.... my horn does not wobble or try to spin in the stand at all. The center of gravity at the angle the horn rests keeps it pretty stable. Ron is right, by putting the bell in the cup, the top keys do not hit the U shape part of the stand at the top.

No stand will prevent a disaster if someone trips over it, for example, but I find the Hurcules is quite stable.

Fuzzy,

Why don't you add a peg to your bass? A good brass repair tech can solder one on the back of the bell very easily. I have found that just using a peg is not quite enough playing support and use a harness as well. Here is the thread that discusses that approach. I think you will find some interesting ideas there.

Ron,
Just to be clear - you're using the Hercules stand?

Tucker,
Thanks for the further details. You've definitely got me leaning towards the Hercules.

Hank,
I did follow that thread with some interest. All the bass clarinets I've ever played on had pegs. I learned on an instrument which had a peg and no strap options. As a kid, I thought the peg was a fun mechanical piece to dink around with. However, on that school-owned instrument, the tightening mechanism was so worn that the instrument would suddenly drop six inches in the middle of playing if I didn't get it tightened "just so."

When I bought my first "professional" bass, it had a dependable peg, plus the option for the neck strap. I tried using both and found it awkward - so I went back to just using the peg.

I might end up adding a peg to this clarinet at some point in the future, but so far, I'm really enjoying playing with just the neck strap. The instrument seems really light and maneuverable to me. If my thumb starts hurting, or other problems show up - I'll add a peg. However, I don't want my decision of which stand to buy, to dictate my need for a peg. :)

Fuzzy,

Here is how I reworked the front portion of my Hercules stand. Note the "decorator" plastic jar lid that serves as the cup. I just unbolted the original front portion which had the section that held the bell suspended bell.

I have used this setup in the pit or in rehearsals and it works fine. Others may want to reverse the instrument so the MP points up. However, the bell then hits the vertical brace.

HRL

PS It took longer to find just the right lid than it did to do the installation.

Hey Fuzzy....

Weren't you originally looking for a bass stand that cradled the bell rather than the peg or the bell sitting in a cup?

There's an Antigua stand on ebay that has a cradling design. I'm not sure if that's what you were looking for, but wanted to pass on the info.

Hank,

Thanks for the photo! I can see that you found the perfect lid (I bet that DID take a while!) It looks much better than I had anticipated.

Tucker,
Yes, I had originally been looking for such a design, but Chris P's post convinced me that it probably wasn't the best idea for my particular clarinet...so I went ahead and ordered the Hercules stand today. Hopefully the groove in the cup will be adequate...if not, I'm resigned to modifying the cup to make it work.

Thanks,
Fuzzy
