Hi all,
I'm a few weeks out of practice, and I'm finding that my articulation on the long B and C as well as the upper clarion and altissimo ranges is suffering right now. Also, a couple notes (altissimo C and D, and that area) are more difficult to get out. Does anyone have any exercises or tips for getting back into shape.

1. Maybe back off your reed strength slightly. Use a fresh reed with a response that's comfortable. You'll be back to your old strength in a few days.
2. Spend some time with rudiments and lots of legato (slurred) playing until you feel more in control. If articulation in the altissimo range feels bad, avoid it for a few days until you're back in control enough to sort things out.

What Karl said, but mostly just play more and things should get back to normal over the course of a week or less. I'd avoid trying to fix the "new" issues with some new regimen unless they are actually old issues. Do try switching up your reeds to make sure you are not mistaking a bad reed for a problem with you. It's amazing how many more reeds work well when you've got well-conditioned chops versus when you are just coming back to the instrument after any significant time away.

The back of your reed (the flat part against the mouthpiece) could be swollen. Flatten it carefully with some fine sandpaper. That can happen when it dries out and then gets wet again. When that happens the horn will produce a good sound, but it can feel unresponsive, stiff, or inflexible.
