The Met seems to be the feeder for major symphony jobs. I think that playing opera, with its long lines and big gestures, is the best possible training.
Anyone want to start a pool on how long he stays?

How times have changed! I remember Herb Blayman staying with the Met for 30 years.

The best stepping stone for the biggest American symphony jobs. But what's left?

Robert, it's interesting you mentioned Herb Blayman. When I was a student at Michigan State in the 70s, there was a lot of discussion about Blayman replacing Keith Stein when he retired. It was reported to us that he was quite interested in leaving the Met and taking the MSU job, but it didn't happen because MSU wasn't able to offer the salary he wanted. I don't know what the Met was paying in those days, but I'm guessing he would have had to take a pay cut if he left.
Blayman did some college teaching during his years at the Met, although as an adjunct professor. After retirement, he taught for a year at the University of Michigan. At some point he started a mouthpiece and instrument stand business, and was quite successful. I bought one of his mouthpieces in the early 80s, liked it, and used it for a long time.
He had a long playing and teaching career, but for some reason, I don't see his name mentioned here very often. I met him once a couple years after he retired from the Met, and he was very friendly.

Yes, Herb Blayman and David Glazer are two stalwart players from the musical past of New York City. Blayman with his many years at the Met and Glazer for so long with the New York Woodwind Quintet. Both blended in so well they sort of became part of the architecture. That doesn't happen much anymore.

As the mention of longevity has come up, Robert (Bob) Hill has just retired after 44 years as principal clarinet with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
He appeared on many of the recordings that Sir Adrian Boult conducted in his later days.
Colin Parr served as principal of the City Of Birmingham Symphony for about 33 years, including all of Simon Rattles time there.
Ray Carpender was 2nd for about 4 years and then principal for a further 33+ years at the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.
Christopher King held principal clarinet of the Ulster Orchestra for about 40 years.
Outside of London most principal (and other) clarinetists tend to stay on in their jobs.
