Back in the days when pay for even the top symphony players was not enough to live on, the temptation to endorse mediocre equipment, just to be paid a few bucks, was not simply overwhelming but a matter of routine.

And of course there was the ad that ran every month for years in the International Musician, in which Tony Scott said "I play only Vibrator reeds. They're the best." As anyone who has ever had the misfortune to try a Vibrator reed knows, they were the worst reeds ever made. The only thing nastier than the tone was the taste, which was like rotting stinkweed.
