Best Concert Band Rep for Clarinets
Author: JamesOrlandoGarcia
Date:   2015-11-20 09:28

I'm playing with a new band that has an EXCELLENT clarinet section. I'm trying to think of pieces that are show off the whole section and also pieces that have a ton of great chamber music in them as well. But I'm drawing a blank. The basics come to mind. We also have an excellent bassoonist that should be featured too.

Grainger- Molly On the Shore
Grainger- Lincolnshire Posy
Sullivan- Pineapple Poll
Wagner - Elsa's procession
Copland - El Salon Mexico (love this because it shows off the killer Eb and Bass too)
Gershwin - Cuban Overture
Marks - Aegean Festival Overture
Verdi - La Forza Del Destino

Thanks in advance for helping me filling the obvious! :)

Weber - Oberon Overture
Von Suppe - Light Cavalry Overture
Rossini -William Tell Overture
Weber - Euryanthe Overture
Rossini - Semiramide Overture
Rossini - La Gazza Ladra Overture
Rossini - Italian in Algiers Overture
Rossini - La Scala di Seta Overture (you'll also need a virtuoso oboist)

The Malcolm Arnold Scottish Dances (can't remember if that's the exact title...it's a four movement thing) has challenging parts for the clarinet section, and a fun bassoon solo too.

James,

An excellent list of really classic wind band literature. I've played bass and Bb clarinet in a couple of bands that have covered pretty much this same set of charts. Lots of wood shedding as well as demanding parts for the rest of the woodwinds. But here are a couple of additions from stuff I've played in the past:

Hindemith: Symphony in Bb for Band
Bennett: Suite of Old American Dances
Some of the Mark Hindsley transcriptions like Rienzi, Academic Festival Overture, Siegfried's Rhine Journey, Romeo and Juliet, etc.

Also check some of the recording from the US Navy and US Marine Bands. There are some really tough overtures that both groups just seem to breeze through which feature each band's tremendous clarinet sections.

This is Grade 6 stuff which should not be attempted by any group other than the better wind bands.

Happy Practicing,

HRL

How about:

Battle of Shiloh march by Barnhouse, with several high As and many 16th notes for the first clarinets, which I played on Wednesday.

Bravado

Clarinet Candy by Leroy Anderson

Great list above. I would add Dahl's Sinfonietta (nice alto clarinet cadenza!!) and two Bernstein transcriptions, Overture to Candide and Three Dances from On the Town. All of these have great parts for the whole section.

I always enjoyed playing Gordon Jacob's band pieces, such as An Original Suite, William Byrd Suite, and Music for a Festival. All of them, especially the last one, have great clarinet parts.

I should also add Paul Fauchet's Symphonie pour Musique d'Harmonie, a wonderful band piece that isn't performed very often.

Hammersmith (Holst) - but you need strong principals at least in most sections and a good Eb player is always nice. But good chamber sections and good clarinet parts.

Anything by Grainger - his works are strong in clarinet, but an unlikely one is a neat bass clarinet solo in Sussex Mummers Christmas Carol while the rest of the group sings during the opening sequence. interestingly, I heard this played at a district band one time.

I might put Postcard (Ticheli) into this category as well.

The Makris is a wonderful piece. The Dahl is great if your band has the chops to play it, like the Hindemith. The Dahl has a clarinet section solo in unison. Neat, challenging, and unconventional for sure.

Here's a smattering of other pieces you might consider looking into:
Milhaud's Suite Francaise, Winds of Nagual (if this is a really good group with a good "eefer") by Colgrass, Grantham's Southern Harmony, Husa's Concerto as well as Music for Prague, and so many others.

In the Clarinet Pages there is actually a list of so-called "quality" band literature with good clarinet section and solo parts. Worth giving that a look.

To me, all these orchestral transcriptions are sort of cheating. :)

Since Tony F brought up Ralph Vaughn Williams' Folk Song Suite... I'll add in Holst: 2nd Suite for Military Band in F Major Op. 28-2

This version is with the US Army Field Band with Choral Accompaniment. The audio quality doesn't match my first link, but I thought it was unique:
