 Serial Number without the prefix,,,

Good Morning All,

I've just purchased 2 Evette & Schaeffeurs with serial #'s 495 and 1920, (no prefix). I've searched high and low to find out more info about them but to no avail. I haven't had a clarinet for 20 years, (it was a Buffet Crampon), so I'm excited about doing my research and restoring these two as best as I can, and then taking my hands off to let a professional do the rest. I believe if I know more about them such as type of wood, what metal the keys are made of etc., I may need to use different products for the restoration.

Any direction and advice would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Cheers,

Robyn. :)

BTW, I live in Australia so availability of certain brands of restoration materials/cleaners etc. may be limited

Hi Robyn,
I'm also in Oz, so I've come across most of the supply problems already. For shining keys I use Wenol polish, available on Ebay, or from Musicmedic. I buy pads, cork, adhesives, etc from Musicmedic or Instrument Clinic, tools and parts from Ferrees, Dawes or Votaw, All of these are OK with supplying to Oz. I suggest you don't buy pads or materials from Oz suppliers, they automatically put a hefty markup on them. If you've got any problems with supplies/materials then email me direct if you like. If you click on my name it will reveal my email address. I'm in Vic.

Hi Tony and thanks for the list of suppliers. I ordered the pads and cork from o/s. They're not the premium quality of course. I'd love to get my hands on some of Doc's bore oil, but still have not heard back from them. I rummaged through my shed and found a natural wood restoring cream which also protects, lubricates etc. It also works quite well on the keys as I gave a couple a quick hand polished to test it out. It's too thick to use on the inside, but I also have the liquid spray made by the same company which I will try out with caution when I have a good amount of time set aside.

However, now that you have given me some suppliers to look up I'll check them out thanks.

Anyhows, I'll be sure to take b4 and after pics to post. :)

Cheers,

Robyn.

Hi Robyn,
I tried to order some Doctors bore oil a while ago and found that they wouldn't post it overseas, presumably for security concerns. Failing that I use almond oil with about 5% alcohol. When I mentioned this on the site I recieved a flurry of answers advising me not to use it, but I've used it for quite a few years now without any problems. Beware of commercial paste or cream products inside the bore, they tend to seal the wood and prevent the passage of oil into the timber.

I don't know if anything has changed in recent months but I have ordered Doctor's products including bore and key oil in previous years with no problem shipping to the UK and only some months ago received my latest order which admittedly was for mainly cork greases and didn't include any oils this time.
