Just a question about the list. The notice says that the excerpt list would be available upon receipt of a résumé. That said, would it be appropriate for me to post that list once I got it? I would think not, but could also help with recruitment.

Boy...They're holding the auditions in January...Way to weed out the folks who wouldn't be happy here that time of year!
(I'm not taking the audition FWIW, I'm so far outta the classical vein now despite how I teach!)

I don't think so.
Actually you might do them a favor by posting the list. It will probably save the committee the trouble of going through a bunch of unqualified candidates by scaring most of them off.

I'll bet it's mostly the standard fair - Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Stravinsky, Ravel etc with one or two unpublished Shostakovich's thrown in there. The "trick" is being good enough and experienced enough. It is one of the better orchestras in the country.

We have a Finnish Music Director, and lots of people of northern European descent. Thinking Sibelius 1 and/or Nielsen 5 might be on the list. They also completed a Sibelius Symphony cycle recodring project this year.
Who knows? Maybe they'll forgo the Mozart Concerto as a solo and put the Nielsen in there!! *joke*

I forget who the present principal is. Does anyone know why he's-she's leaving? Or was it a temporary position. By the way, the Baltimore sympony will announce their principal opening some time in the spring. They have a one year temp now.

Greg Williams had been acting Principal since Burt Hara left for Los Angeles in 2014.

For anyone who could not access the above files, here are the repertoire requirements for Minnesota Orchestra's recorded screening round:
Mozart Concerto mvt. 1 m. 54-98 only
Beethoven Symphony 6 mvt. 1 m. 474-492
Mendelssohn Scherzo m. 1-48
Schubert Symphony 8 mvt. 2 m.66-83
Shostakovich Symphony 9 mvt. 2 m. 1-55; mvt. 3 m.1-39
Recordings are due November 30th.
That said, what does it take to really stand out at these excertpts? This seems like such rudimentary repertoire that I am not sure what they are looking for beyond the standards we were all taught (articulation, dynamics, etc.). Does this mean that they intend on inviting back everyone who plays exactly what's on the page, or is there something else?

If you have to ask...
You know, there's a reason virtually all orchestra auditions ask for these particular excerpts. If you think it's easy to play these perfectly in rhythm, with impeccable intonation, clear articulation and an appropriate sense of style, then I would guess you have never been on a professional audition committee.
I'm sure the live audition list will be much more comprehensive.

I totally agree with RMK54 on both accounts. The live audition will be much more comprehensive. You can tell a great deal about a player from this short list and the committee may have to listen to a lot of recordings.

There's a lengthy and rather comprehensive article about orchestra auditions and hiring in the October 2015 Horn Call - a publication of the International Horn Society. "Auditions in North America Today" by Ashley Cumming, pp.64-72. It's not available online but your French Horn friend may subscribe and its probably available in an conservatory or academic music library near you- check http://worldcat.org. E.g., in the SF-Bay area 8 libraries have it.
