The key to it all is knowing what to do to a reed. The beauty in the ATG is not the tools, but that it is methodical and has a plan. Too often a reed does not work and many people just pick a spot and scrape away with little rhyme or reason. You don't need either tool and there are lots of other options one can use, but either works fine if you are comfortable and know what to do.

It is a shame to hear about people who who toss most of their reeds. In my experience, most reeds can be made playable with very little work. Sometimes in a matter a minute or two one can do what is needed. Often making sure the back is flat and a little bit of balancing can make most reeds sing beautifully.

These days there is SO much info out there on various websites and blogs including this board as well as books and articles and videos. There is no excuse not to have at least a basic working knowledge of reeds.
