At least that means I won't get slammed for using incorrect syntax anymore. I know what I mean and sure other do when I say things in my own way, regardless if it's incorrect by far more learned standards.

The biggest disaster that could possibly befall this BBoard is that Tony Pay would no longer contribute.
If, as seems likely, that has now happened, Chris P, I find it extremely disappointing that you have decided to hijack this thread to make it about yourself.

I will greatly miss Tony's being involved here. I've learned a great deal from him and hope that his apparent exit turns out to be temporary. I suppose the fact that he left the message body empty and hasn't come back to clarify means that at least for now he means "goodbye" permanently. I hope he changes his mind one day.

For those perhaps not acquainted with what Tony is still capable of doing there are some beautiful examples contained in a performance of Donizetti's rarely performed "Les Martyrs" recorded at London's Royal Festival Hall just a few weeks back and broadcast later by the BBC.

There is a gloriously played clarinet obbligato about 29 mins after the start and more in other parts (whole opera is about 3 Hrs).
This is only available for about 1 week or so more so do check it out soon.

Since this is taking on the character of a vote of confidence in either Chris's or Tony's contributions, let me clarify that I was *not* going in that direction. I value the contributions of both - it isn't a question, at least for me, of respecting one *or* the other or taking a side.
As of now, Chris is here, to our benefit, and Tony seems for now to be gone, IMO, to our loss.
Long live the Clarinet BB.

Bye, Tony. It's a measure of your influence that even a message with only a subject line and your name should stir up such feeling.
You'll be back or you won't. If you stay retired, I'll miss you, and I think lots of others will, too. It's always refreshing to engage a live mind, backed by deep knowledge and a career of distinguished performance.

You were the second person to respond in this thread, before I did. My posts were a reaction to yours.
I posted in anger borne out of disappointment with Tony leaving and you saying, in effect, "well, look on the bright side, I won't have Tony correcting me ever again".
It immediately became a thread about you, and a tacit plea for others to say “don’t worry, Chris, you’re a valued contributor to this BBoard”. Just look at the first post after yours to see that it had that very effect.
You could have said “good riddance to Tony”, if that was what you felt, or much better still, kept quiet. You still haven’t made a direct reference to Tony.
You also said:
“so don’t take the moral high ground with me”
See the explanation above.
For what it’s worth, Chris, I have a high opinion of what you have written generally and expect you will continue to make a very valuable contribution, but that takes nothing away from my earlier comments about the much greater contribution made by Tony.
You see, it’s about relativity, not denigration. It’s your contribution in THIS THREAD that I have a problem with.
P.S. To any people who may think I’m the hijacker:
Many apologies; I felt I had to respond to Chris, once he had said what he originally said, which seemed like huge disrespect to Tony, whatever Chris may really have meant.
But, whatever he or anyone else writes now, I’ll keep any comments to being about Tony.

Thanks Ben for introducing me to yet another text inspired acronym. My support of Chris was in no way meant to be taking sides with anyone. I have enjoyed Tony's clarinet playing on CD as well as his contributions here.....even tho I didn't always understand them. Hopefully he will get his wind back and continue to enlighten us.

Goodbye Mr Pay. I vividly remember my early posts in which I attempted to paraphrase some of your writings. It seems I was a little out of my depth with both subject matter and clear writing style. Your response made this abundantly clear. Never the less you proceeded to carry on discussions with me and others in which you attempted to bring us into your world. It is a different world. I'm beyond sorry to see Tony Pay depart from this forum. I've learned a great deal from him since I began reading it in 1999. Fwiw, due to recent elder-care responsibilities, including three months without regular computer access, I haven't followed this forum closely lately. I don't know what precipitated Tony Pay's withdrawal and I'm not involved in any current dispute. But whatever the hell happened, it's bad news for all of us who value Tony's expertise.

I do, and I also think it's likely -- because that kind of thing happens. I'm in a similar situation on one of my formerly-favorite forums (nothing to do with music). No feuding involved, but a bit more than a year ago, the webmaster there persisted in posting retro humor about a certain ethnic group that includes some of my relatives and closest friends. The webmaster reacted to my (polite) objection by doubling down on making those wisecracks nearly every time I posted. So I said goodbye rather than incite more racist humor. I do check back on that site periodically. If I ever saw solid evidence that the webmaster had changed his ways, then I'd go back in a heartbeat.
I don't know why Tony left this site and I'm reasonably confident that it has nothing to do with the webmasters, but I hope that whatever did drive him off leaves him with a similar option to come back here, under the right circumstances.

Having followed most of Tony's posts lately, I didn't notice anything too touchy happening. Certainly nothing that would, from a historical perspective, seem likely to break his stride. I guess that Tony is doing something else right now, and is too busy to write stuff. Maybe he's practicing (ack, pang of guilt.)
