 HARRY KELLER, clarinetist

In 1952 & 53, when I attended E J Toll Jr High in Glendale, CA, after my parents had bought me my Selmer Ebonite (I had been learning on a metal clarinet issued to me by Glendale Public Schools), they arranged for me to take lessons from this rather odd gentleman, living in a cluttered frame house just east of the school, named Harry Keller. Mr Keller had worked mostly as a studio musician, but was very much devoted to classical music. For example, he had transcribed for clarinet the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, among others, and used to warm up for our sessions playing the most difficult cadenzas from that Concerto. It was during my studies with him that I eventually mastered (?) the solo parts of the Mozart Clarinet Concerto. When my parents bought a home in Van Nuys, Mr Keller would drive his blue Dodge sedan out to the Valley weekly to continue my musical education. I joined the Van Nuys High Orchestra & Marching Band until I graduated in 1958, & never saw Harry Keller again.
