I was just asked to play an Orchestral Concert in China! (it's mixing several US Orchestra members with one of the top 3 Chinese Orchestras).
They do a lot of work with Lang Lang.
Will be over the Thanksgiving Holiday.
Looking forward to it! (not the long flight though....)

But take care, as the air pollution is horrendous and last year a group from LA toured over a week and I think 80% came down with something.

Wow - as if LA didn't have a ton of bad air too.
I wonder if they got sick from the polution, water, or germs in the air?
My immune system is really good, so will see. Just the flight is a major butt kicker.

Hope you get to see some stuff. When I was touring China over the 2012/13 New Year we went all over the place. Saw the Leshan Buddha, Chengdu Panda sanctuary, did over 20 concerts to packed houses. Got sick and but was well to celebrate the New Year in Chengdu. Be warned that audiences are quite rowdy. Lots of coughing and lots of hocking up loogies, especially in quiet moments. One moment that sticks in my mind is when we were playing Nimrod and the quiet opening chord and someone did that. Really spoilt the moment.
Have fun David, you'll love the culture shock I'm sure and beware of the food. It's nothing like the Chinese food you get in the US.

Seriously, have fun! We're hoping that our quintet's saxophonist can find a way to get us to China. With his connections to home, and the recital tour he just did over the summer, hopefully something will come up!

To get into the right musical mood for China, check out classical alto saxophone player Claude Delanngle's YouTube performance of the Yiu-Kwong Chung Concerto for Saxophone and Chinese Orchestra #1. Throughout, he echos the sound and style of many Chinese instruments on the sax, and the orchestra incorporates many of these same instruments, along with an augmented, mostly all female, percussion section.

That pipes of Pan wind instrument is called a Sheng. Concertos have been written for it. One is by Korean composer Unsuk Chin (available on YouTube), who also wrote a concerto for clarinet that Kari Kriiku played just a few days ago with the New York Philharmonic.

A long flight to China? Harden up! It's not far, only about 12 to 14 hours.
Hope you have a great tour- a couple of times colleagues of mine have been on orchestra tours in China (and American group, and an NZ "NZSO/APO" combined group) where the local promoters showed themselves to be either exploitative or incompetent (and it's in their interest if you can't work out WHICH). Other than lying and not fullfulling contractual obligations, these promoters did such fabulous things as dump an orchestra in a venue with no heating (wintertime) or drinking water at 10am on the morning of a concert with no transport to hotels etc until after the concert. etc etc etc
If this is organised through the "China Philharmonic" (based in Beijing, they play a lot with Lang Lang so might be the group you refer to) they are a good bunch who will treat you well (and who play to a fairly high standard despite not having open auditions for their positions). I'll wager a hapenny bun this is the group you have been invited by (or their promoters) and you'll have a topper experience!
I don't mean to sound all discouraging with my initial comments- but thought it prudent to let you know people have been very disappointed in the past... as in "I'm going to get a taxi to the airport" disappointed (and you hear about these things in real time, despite the Chinese govt banning free speech and torturing political prisoners).
