Mindy--

I've had the best luck locally in the major "record" stores, which where I live are Tower Records and Virgin. They both have large classical collections.
(I have also found a couple of CDs at Borders and Barnes & Noble.)

Most of the CDs are filed by composer. If you are looking for the Mozart clarinet concerto, for instance, look for the concerto subsection (possibly even the clarinet concerto subsection) of the Mozart section. There are usually two or three versions in stock.

If you want a CD of just clarinet music, then (as suggested above) look for the instrumental section in the classical area, and within it look for a clarinet subsection. With any luck there will be at least a few CDs there, and the subsection may even be broken down further by artist. You may also find something in the woodwind trio, quartet, and quintet subsections.

(I would suggest asking for help from a clerk, but you may not find someone familiar enough with the classical area to be of much help.)

If you're looking for jazz artists, it's a little easier. The jazz section (at least in the stores I've mentioned) is arranged alphabetically by artist.

To find more CDs, and to find more artists, there are some great online resources. Sherman Friedland (a recording clarinetist, sneezy columnist, and sponsor) has a web site. So does Gary Van Cott (also a sneezy sponsor), who sells books about clarineting, a few CDs (some not easily obtainable elsewhere), and who has a link to selected clarinet CDs available through amazon.com. You can reach both those web sites by going to the main sneezy menu and clicking on the SPONSOR button.

Clicking on the RESOURCES button on the main menu page will take you to an alphabetical list of retailers. Weiner Music Company has an extensive list of CDs. They have a web site and a printed catalog. Muncy Winds, also has an extensive list of CDs, but I don't think they have them on their web site. They, too, have a printed catalog.

Once you find an artist you like, do a search on the Internet (I like google as a search engine) under their name. They may have a site, which almost always lists their recordings, or you may find them under their recording label's site.

This should get you more than started. Hope it's helpful.
