I want to recommend to correspondents a recent recording of Clarinet music by this composer--Tower records sells it if you want to look it up. What makes this late classical music so persuasive for me is superb performances by Steven D. Hartman, the Scandia Symphony and others. Mr. Hartman's playing is so radiantly beautiful, so free of show-biz effects, and filled with such authority and character that by the time I got to the recapitulation of Op. 11 I was, quite frankly, in tears. It is encouraging that these days one can still find real musicianship joined to exceptional technical facility. Any student or professional will be warmly inspired by Mr. Hartman's playing, and I only wish that he will soon record the Mozart as well.
