James Kanter used to sell his mouthpieces by direct mail order. He was a frequent advertiser in the pages of The Clarinet for many years and juggled his extremely busy career as a top movie studio clarinetist with the business of mouthpiece making. He stopped selling mouthpieces on the open market some years ago and has now retired also as a studio musician.
Evidently he has resumed making mouthpieces for professional clarinetists on a very limited basis. As I understand it, the $100 is to support the California clarinet organization that is sponsoring this interesting 5-day clinic that includes master classes with Michele Zukovsky, William Powell and other pro clarinetists. Kanter is not just setting up a table with his latest pieces; he is giving a detailed lecture on how he goes about making his own designs.
Some people might consider this giving away a few trade secrets and would gladly like to hear what he has to say and has learned from professional players all over the world (including Martin Frost) who use his mouthpieces and from his career as first chair clarinet in the Pacific Symphony Orchestra and soloist on many movie sound tracks.
