Does anyone know of any universities or large symphonies in the Texas and Louisiana area that has a pair of basset horns they would lend out for a performance of the Mozart Requiem? We are doing the Requiem in April in the East Texas area and need to borrow a pair for several weeks. Thanks for any possible leads.

I'm performing the requiem in April as well. Most organizations and universities rarely lend out those types of instruments to non members. Luckily for you, the basset parts work in my opinion, better on clarinets. They are rather high basset parts and don't go below the range of the Bb clarinet.

I couldn't disagree with you more.
The ethereal sound of the basset horns, especially in the opening, is absolutely incredible. When played on (regular) clarinets, it's only very nice.
Mozart knew what he was doing!

The clarinet parts call for A, Bb and C clarinets which is fine if you like juggling instruments or transposing - or you could just play it all on basset horn as was originally intended so you only have the one instrument which can be kept keep warm as opposed to playing on several cold clarinets.
And you definitely need the more sombre tone of the basset horns in this.

I think you'd be better off asking the clarinetist community in your area rather than an institution. A person would be more willing to lend their instruments than a university, I would think (that's my experience in the DC and Cleveland areas).

Perhaps there are music stores that could rent the instruments. RDG may have some for rent. USC or UCLA on the west coast may have a pair. I am reluctant to let anyone borrow my basset horn for various reasons.
