Hello: I'd like to hear some of the better jazz clarinetists play some of their better pieces. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm more interested in modern recordings, improvisational jazz. Thanks everyone for all the help so far. This bb
is terrific !!!

I really like Kenny Davern's recordings with "The Swedish Jazz Kings" on Opus3 records.
(Kenny may be an acquired taste. He has a syrupy approach, with lotsa vibrato.)
For the other extreme, check out Buddy DeFranco, who uses nearly no vibrato but has real dynamic control. He cut a few duet albums which showcase the horn.
You will likely get SCADS of responses to this query.

I know you wanted only modern recordings, but I couldn't resist.
By all means, get Edmond Hall's Blue Note CD ("Profoundly Blue"). These are fantastic recordings made in the late 1930s /early 1940s with Meade Lux Lewis, Charlie Christian, Harry Carney and others. Every serious clarinetist must have this disc.

I agree about Edmond Hall. My favorite, however, has got to be Barney Bigard.

The Alvin Batiste "Late" CD is a worthy recording for sampling hardcore bop.

I was just listening to Buddy DeFranco's CD "Gone With The Wind" recorded live back in 1977 with some wonderful long improvisations. Also Buddy's more recent recordings with Dave McKenna on piano (like You Must Believe in Swing) are quite fine. Not to mention the classic 1956 date with piano great Art Tatum (available as part of the Complete Art Tatum CD series). Apparently Buddy had a 103 degree fever when he encountered the genius of Tatum at that session and yet played magnificently.! Why not check out Buddy's web site for more info on the original bop clarinetist?
