In the last 15 years I have been served well by techs associated with this board. But because of the number of vintage instruments I have, I'm really looking for someone in the area who will work with me on what I might call a somewhat more a la carte fashion rather that ask me to plug in to one repair level or the other. I have many instruments that I truly hope to bring to playable condition (over time).
My personal hope would be to find someone in my area (Wash DC, MD, northern Virginia) who would (1) charge based on as-needed work (for example, on two or three instruments at a time), (2) not keep an individual instrument longer than 12-14 weeks, (3) have a particular sensitivity to key positions and heights, and (4) have a tolerance for old Buffets and Selmers (if not be "enthusiastic").
As I say, I have been served well but am just attempting to fine-tune my repair needs, mainly because of the number of instruments I have. Suggestions appreciated!

Wes Rice is in Maryland and has worked on a few of my vintage clarinets (a Selmer CT Omega, a Leblanc Dynamique, and a Conn 524N) with very good results. His turn-around time has been pretty good and I got all of my clarinets back in just a couple of weeks. I've only used him for overhauls but his website indicates that he does regular repairs at an hourly rate.

I'm a fan of Jeremy Soule in Staunton, VA. He has done an excellent job for me at very reasonable prices on a number of vintage clarinets. www.thevintageclarinetdoctor.com

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, I have considered Jeremy. Had not heard of Wes Rice. Thanks again!

I recently had Wesley Rice do a complete overhaul on my Bb and fix 2 small things on my A (a la carte so to speak). I am very pleased with the work. The completely overhauled horn plays better than when it was new. The turn around time was five days. The caveat: he's not cheap. His workshop is located near Salisbury, MD on the Eastern Shore.

I've been using Roger Young for many years now. He's repaired and overhaulded all my clarinets, bass, 2 Bb and my A. I've had him do many of my students clarinets as well, he's the best repairman I've ever used bare none, absolutly fantastic. He lives and works in Edgwood MD outside of Annopolis. His number is 410-269.6647.

Peter Ferrante, proprietor of Presto Brass and Woodwinds in Arlington, Virginia, has done first-rate work for me on both clarinets and saxophones. He's the one I go to with problems I don't dare mess with myself. Fair warning, though: He's in demand, he's busy and sometimes the backlog of customers makes him slow.

L&L Music in Gaithersburg, MD is another good choice. They have several repair people on the staff, so they don't get as backed up as a solo worker would.
