I'm also playing alto clarinet this fall and had to spend considerable time and experimentation getting the set-up just right (a trip to the tech to fix any issues, relearning the mouthpiece, selecting some different reeds, etc.). I found that I like a softer reed than usual on clarinet (I usually play on a #4 vandoren, now playing alto on a #3) and that I prefer alto SAX reeds to alto clarinet reeds.
Because I play other clarinets more frequently (Bb & Eb soprano, primarily), I had to get reacquainted with finger position as well -- especially important because I play an open hole instrument!
With some set-up changes, practice, and patience, I'm now sounding far better and I'm even a little proud of the way it's coming along. Alto clarinet is definitely its own beast!
