 Bore Oil at Overhaul
Author: Fred
Date:   2001-03-06 01:13

During an overhaul, what are the relative merits of the oil immersion baths vs. applying oil and letting it sit and soak in? Some awfully good overhaulers do it different ways.

Doctor, do you have any comments?

Fred - I just stick to the chemistry. I will defer to the many experienced repair experts about what they do to oil the clarinets during overhaul. With the pentetrating qualities of my oil I do not believe that total emersion is necessary but again, I do not do repair work and will let the experienced people make their own choices. I have been selling a lot of oil to repair people and not in the quantities that would fill up an immersion bath - so .....

My only experience with a hot oil treatment to a woodwind was done by Carl McGuire in Tulsa to a Garde oboe's overhaul and restoration. It is now being played regularly by a retired teacher in our comm. band [and in other groups in Tulsa area], and appears to be very successful . I inquire every few weeks. Don

I had forgotten that some time ago, my Noblet Eb soprano was overhauled by Steve McGuire and with the H O T the '60's horn looks and plays better than new. I expect that the treatment helps to diminish cracking tendencies on both the Eb and the oboe. Don
