 1stopclarinet still in business?
Author: Musinix

Hi,

I ordered four boxes of reeds from 1stopclarinet.com back on 4/6. My credit card was charged, but I still haven't received my order or any communication as of 4/16. I sent an email to them asking for a status, and I called their number, but I continue to only get their recording that all of their agents are currently helping other customers. I have purchased from them in the past without any issues.

Does anyone know if they are still in business?

I ordered a ligature a few years ago and never received it after a few emails... so I'm led to believe that they are no longer in business.

They were still in business in January because my order was processed and delivered to Canada.

I contacted another business across the parking lot from 1StopClarinet and a man volunteered to walk over to their shop and report back to me. He said that the door was locked, but an individual was inside and opened the door. He gave the individual a business card with his personal phone number, which turned out to be Mr. Anton Angelo. I just talked with Mr. Anton Angelo with 1StopClarinet and he said that my reeds were on backorder, but they shipped out on 4/13. I'll reply back to this thread if I don't receive them in 3 or 4 more days. So, it looks like they're still in business. Their prices are very attractive, however, I would suggest that anyone that is considering purchasing from them first conduct a Google search on owners Tai-Ling Gigliotto and Anton Angelo's personal legal troubles a few years ago. I won't purchase anything else from them again.

Yes, it's my understanding that they are both operated by the same people.

Out of curiosity, which brand of reeds did you order? The reason I ask is because a major music store in Canada has had difficulty ordering Vandoren reeds from their supplier. The supplier claims the problem is with Vandoren.

I usually purchase Vandoren blue box and V12's, but I thought I would try something different this time, so I ordered three boxes of Rico Grand Selects, and one Rico Grand Select thick blank.

I received my order today, so it does appear that they may have been on backorder as I was told by 1StopClarinet. I guess that means they are still in business.

I never have any problems with them. Actually, I have had much better luck with them than with WWBW. But, that just may be because I use Rico GMSE and they always seem to have it in stock.

I always get my stuff reasonably fast, and I never had to pay customs fees.

I ordered 4 reeds last Thursday and they still haven't arrived. They're normally pretty quick.

I ordered 2 mouthpieces from them and after 2 weeks wrote to them, no response. I wrote 3 times and after a threat of a chargeback on my card they wrote and said they were on back order, and would arrive in a week. After 2 weeks passed I wrote again, and after the 3rd e-mail they responded. I canceled the order and they credited my card. I have read of similar cases, and I will never order anything from them again. They have without a doubt the worse customer service of any company I ever dealt with.

I have heard of lots of folks who have had issues- long wait times, really slow shipping and complete lack of contact/response.

IMO- There are plenty of great well run businesses that make it completely unnecessary to deal with places like this.

I just called on my reed order, I was answered on my first call. He was helpful and gave me my delivery date. Let's just see if things follow through, but I doubt he lied about shipping my order.

Under ordinary circumstances, I avoid doing business with companies that charge my credit card when they receive my order rather than when they ship the merchandise.

Hey Jack,

I don't know about you, but SOOOOO many companies will ship/charge what they have and back order what's not there. When that arrives, they ship/charge. This plays havoc with MY accounting.........so I guess the opposite drives me crazy.

The Gigliotti Brand reeds are pretty good. That's about the only thing that they put his name on that is of quality.

The colored mouthpieces just don't quite cut it ;)

I've never dealt with 1stopclarinet, but many companies will honor a "No Back Orders" request on an order form. Sometimes I prefer to be told something is out of stock so that I can buy it elsewhere right now, and not end up with a duplicate if/when the back ordered item finally shows up.

Before I retired from my stained glass designer-builder business, I sometimes experienced delays of months on deliveries of back-orders of hand-blown, hand-rolled glass. Usually I had no option but to wait, when I needed replacement glass in exactly the right color and texture to match the original glass in an antique window. Glass manufacturers do periodic, limited production runs of antique-replica glass. They won't produce a small batch to order. That's understandable, but the delays drove some of my customers nuts. I'm sure they wondered whether I was just being lazy about finishing their restoration work and covering up by lying about waiting for the back-orders. With most clarinet-related stuff, at least mouthpieces or pads or cork or whatever will be available somewhere else, if the customer preserves the option to cancel instead of back-ordering.

Dear Lelia,

I got into a deep discussion over "back orders" with Woodwind Brasswind. They (as most companies do) will not charge for an item for which you wait as they work on getting it for you. HOWEVER, Woodwind Brasswind will NOT hold items that ARE in stock until the back orders arrive so that the entire order can ship at once (this may be a slightly less reasonable request on MY part but I have some current restrictions on my end how orders must be processed). So the situation with Woodwind Brasswind could wind up being a "never ending back order" with items that WERE in stock going out of stock by the time the initial back order comes in.

I am sure this is just my headache, but I needed to vent.

I share David Blumberg's "moral reasons" for not ordering from 1stopclarinet. Btw, Ferree's is one of those good-guy companies that do honor "no back order" requests. I've never asked for in-stock items to be held for me until all the back orders come in. I don't want to wait for whatever's in stock on the chance that the back-ordered stuff will become available in a timely fashion, for fear of getting into one of those "wait til you die of old age" situations with a manufacturer that does infrequent production runs on the less-popular items. I prefer to take delivery of whatever's available when I place the order, then just wait awhile and re-order what was out of stock.

Re the moral reasons - that sure is a valid point... just then we sould probably avoid other businesses with a rather unsettling past or present as well. Various outdoor and sports gear companies come to mind, the odd coffee chain, some smart phone manufacturer, and so on. Or, we as musicians should know about one orchestra's stance re "women and other minorities" or maybe some or more conductors' brown past. I'm just saying...

About two years ago I had an email exchange with one of the 1stop employees, it was about a barrel and its exact dimensions. They were very skilled and helpful, and sometime in mid-conversation the employee wrote that a whole bunch of musicians were working there and that they were glad they had the opportunity to work at odd or off hours in a "related" business. So in the end we just hurt the wrong people.

Anyway, I don't know if the emplyee mix is still the same, and I think I read somewhere that in the meantime the case was closed and the culprit sentenced to several years.

Ben, a "ma and pa" business where they actually beat the living hell out of their kid for a long time, yeah........

Would you buy blood diamonds from the killers directly?

I agree with Tictactux, a bad past shouldn't exclude those that do business well. Though there are some back order issues (I have a swab on back-order now), all of my other experiences with the company have been fantastic. This is the first thing from them that they've had to back order for me vs. the multiple things I have had on back order at wwbw. Though I have yet to receive it I'm sure that it will come before the thing that took the longest at wwbw, 2 years (I'm not including the reeds that I also ordered and cancelled after a year (also second and third place both took a year-all separate orders)). They have "funky" accounting but, at least you don't get double charged on back order shipping this way. They ship faster than wwbw, 1stop is in Florida, which is about as far from SoCal (location at the time) as one can get (and I got their shipments faster than wwbw which is based in CA. The prices at 1stop are better. Oh, and if you are for not buying from those that do wrong you should stop buying from gas stations period (because someone- if not the whole company (looking at you BP and Exxon)- did something f@@ked up there). Not to say that I don't sympathize with the kid. Also, the business is a separate "person" from those who own it, and it sounds like it is more than just the 2 people in question that would be affected.

I might avoid these other businesses if I knew their backgrounds with any certainty. I *do* know the background of this particular business.

1stop is owned and operated by one guy. It's not a CEO with employees situation.

Do the research, and find more than just one article, as some are much more comprehensive than others.

As a decent human, ya just don't do that stuff.........

I ordered several items April 22 and the package arrived today. Fairly standard time to ship from Fla. to Canada so I would certainly use them again. Shipping charges were very reasonable compared to others who ship to Canada. In fact some sites don't ship here.
