What are the "standard excerpts" from Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio? Thanks!

Capriccio is a big clarinet piece, so if you're playing it for an audition you should really know all of it. With that said, the most important parts would probably be the two solos from the first Alborado, the cadenza in the fourth movement, and of course the solo from the second Alborado (with the sextuplets). Of course, as I stated, you should really just get the whole part and learn it all. In auditions everything can be fair game, and some committee member might just want you to play the solo in the fifth movement, just to see if you've done your homework.

Goodness, if only there were books available that contained standard orchestral excerpts for the clarinet... [tongue]

Bonade had a decent excerpt in his book. I agree that this is one of the pieces thats often asked at auditions, even with military bands, so buy the whole clarinet part. Lots of really fun solos, not just for the clarinet, but several other instruments. Probably one of my favorite pieces to perform. It's lots of fun to practice and perform.

It's often asked at your college auditions.

One of my favorite recordings was with Marcellus and the Cleveland Orchestra. Not sure if you can still get the recording, but any recording would help anyone thats never played this piece. The trills should be carefully studied, because a lot of pros play them differently. Since the trill notes at the beginning are so fast even the top players have their own way to play them, for example some pros may not play the measure before just to be ready for the solo.

So many books have the solo parts. It's always a good idea to get the whole part for a piece like this. ESP eddiesclarinet.com

The Szell/Cleveland Orchestra recording with Marcellus is available at http://www.amazon.com/Mussorgsky-Pictures-Exhibition-Rimsky-Korsakov-Borodin/dp/B0000CF33L/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1313359435&sr=8-1 It belongs in every clarinetist's library.

I still remember standing in a dorm room in 1961 with a bunch of other freshman clarinetists when this was put on the turntable. We all came in thinking we were pretty good and went out with our hair standing on end and our jaws dropped to the floor.

The complete 1st clarinet part is available in Volume V of The Orchestra Musician’s CD-ROM Library. If you're serious about the clarinet, you should have the complete set, http://www.vcisinc.com/omcdrom.htm. It will be the best $221.95 you ever spent.
