 Wenzel Fuchs Clarinet Barrel
Author: dclari81

Dear Clarinetists,

I recently attended a master-class by Mr Wenzel Fuchs and i was just wondering what type of barrel is was using. It had a tuning ring in the center where he would just turn to adjust the intonation. It resembles the one on this website

http://www.rsberkeley.com/Adjustable-Clarinet-Barrel.php

But it isnt the one as his barrel had a metal tuning ring in the center which turns to lengthen or shorten.

could anyone help me on this?

sincerely
Desmond

From your description, probably the Z-Birne by Paulus & Schuler. No gap when you lengthen the barrel. P&S make barrels with bores to suit French Boehm, Reform Boehm and Oehler.

Kenb is right, Fuchs is now using a Paulus and Schuller barrel. I was in Berlin back in September and bought one for my clarinet. They are very good and extremely easy to use and the adjustments on the fly are a great thing for adjusting while you are in an ensemble playing.

Contact Die Holzblaser in Berlin for more info on purchasing.

Thanks you both for the replies... i will check it out. I agree it was really convenient to tune!

Is there a website i can look at? The website i found is www.thomann.de/fr/becs_et_poires_pour_clarinettes.html
but it only has german system barrel.
Would it work for Boehm? I play on a pair of Selmer Recital Clarinets.

Desmond -

I got on to the Paulus and Schuller site this afternoon, but it seems to be off-line right now. The site says that the Z-Birne barrel is made only for the German clarinet, and not for the Boehm.

There are P&S Z-Birnes for French Boehm as well, though this might not be clear on their site.
I've only dealt directly with Henry Paulus. email info@paulus-schuler.de

Thank you kenb and Ken Shaw, I found the site up and working now. Will drop them an email soon. Hope it works well with the recitals :D

How is this different from some of the other adjustable barrels?
What is on the inside? Metal sleeves?

The inside is hard rubber similar to mouthpiece material. There are two sleeves that slide up and down in the bore to add length with no gap created by extending the length. They make models where the bottom joint is either hard rubber or wood. They have different wood types available for the bottom joint as well with different finishes. Like anything you should probably try multiple ones. I was lucky to try in the store about six before I decided one particular barrel. I choose one with the wood bottom joint. It seemed to have more "ring" in the sound.

I know that Die Holzblaser has models for french length barrels.

I don't know whether German barrels are cylindrical or conical. If they're cylindrical, a length change should work fine. But at least for Boehm barrels, the intonation and playing qualities are strongly affected by any change in the shape of the cone.

Kalmen Opperman made minute adjustments to his barrel bores, usually making a "wasp waist" design that expanded slightly at the bottom. That couldn't be preserved on an adjustable barrel.

The adjustable length barrels I've tried on my Buffet have all been dreadful, at least for me.

Ken's right, the french bore is more problematic.

I should qualify my response and say that I play Wurlitzer 185 Reformed Boehm clarinets which are german bore instruments. I did not try the P&S french models. Sorry for the confusion.

I have tried this barrel and still stay with my Backun's fatboy barrels 67, 66, 65 mm.
German Zoom-birne has more bright sound for my taste. Backuns are darker.
I play Buffet RC Prestige Greenline clarinets and Charles Bay H2 MO-M mouthpiece.

Ken Shaw asked about the shape of interior bore of German v. French barrels. I +believe+ the German barrels are cylindrical. Newer French bore stock (not accessory**) models that I have measured have some degree of reverse taper--sometimes very slight, although some of the narrower bore models are cylindrical (eg stock Selmer Recital).

**such as the V2 designation barrel that is included with the new Buffet Vintage model as an extra barrel.

Disclaimer......I make and sell barrels.

After seeing Reiner Wehle at a master class I sat in on, he uses a very similar barrel on his oehler clarinet, making small adjustments every 10 minutes or so.

If it is 2 hard rubber sleeves, then they must be pretty thick. I guess there is a big "step" going from one sleeve to the next??? This is very similar in design to the old click barrel, right?

The step is less than 1mm.

Interesting, these kind of barrels look like '800 clarinet barrels.
An italian clarinetist use this , Antonio Tinelli, listen here

I wanted to pass along some additional information on the Paulus and Schuler barrels.

I saw now on their website http://www.paulus-schuler.de/ that you can order them directly through P&S.

I got mine at Die Holzblaser in Berlin. What is curious though is that they don't offer various sizes in the initial lenght of the barrel. I was able to try
55, 56 and 57mm for an RB Wurlitzer 185 set I play on.

Anyway, they have french barrels listed for sale now along with the german models.

I was with Wenzel Fuchs all week at the IWWF and I own 3 P&S Barrels, one for my Toscas and 2 for my Wurlitzer Reform Boehms and they in my opinion are the state of the art. When you see many of the top German players like Wenzel, Sabine Meyer, Karl Leister, and in the US Pascual Forteza and more, there is something cutting edge about these barrels. I have had many try these and they want them. Sound is improved and they surpass the Meonnig and other barrels that are pushed on the market. The makers are both members of the Beethoven Orch in Bonn, Germany.

does anyone know where I can order the ones that work with French Barrels? Do they work for Bb and A, or is there a different model for each.
