 Deal on Forestone
Author: Nasubi77
Date:   2010-09-10 11:44

I got an email from Forestone saying their reeds were on sale at Amazon for $15.95. However, when I went to Amazon, the price was $21.95.

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=forestone+reeds&x=0&y=0

What to do?

(sulking at the fact that Amazon Canada does not carry Forestone)

Ask Forestone about it for more detail! At $15.95, this is smokin' hot deal.

Hmmm ... Let's see. You got an email from a company about a sale. You can't find the sale. What to do?

Me! Me! I know! I know! Write a message on a bulletin ...

Maybe email or call the COMPANY? That might work a tad better than writing here. The results of your inquiry ("The Forestone sale link us at ...") might belong here afterwards.

I got the Forestone spam as well. Since I've never bought Forestone reeds, if the ad is legit (and for all I know, it may not be legit), the company may be spamming people who post on this bulletin board. Since the e-mail had an attachment and came from a source unfamiliar to me, I assumed it might be badware and dumped the e-mail unread straight into the Junk bin.

To Mark: Thanks, smartass. I did that first and posted here while waiting on a reply. So, I should post only if I have useful information, and not if I have a question, eh? Way to promote fellowship in this community, jerk.

And it is legit. The email was straight from Forestone (I am a customer and on their mailing list) with a link straight to Amazon. There is a code you have to enter to get the discount. I overlooked that the first time I read the email.

It's possible, but in the past the emails have been obtained via the ICA membership list; the ICA sells the email & postal mail list of their members to advertisers. Not that I've seen a checkbox on the ICA member screen to opt out, but there really hasn't been that much use of that list.

Screen scraping this BBoard probably isn't worth it.

Ya know, that was really unnecessary and mean. I've been a member of this board for quite some time, but I usually just lurk.

I'm not a professional, and while I once was a music major, I didn't finish my degree and it's been quite some time since I gave it the ol' "college try" (literally) so I have lost a lot of knowledge and skill.

I'm just a hobbyist who plays in a little community symphony which is below your standards, I'm sure. But it's not like I fill this board with useless comments and elementary questions all the time.

Do you consider this board so exclusive that regular people like me can't post? I thought the purpose of this board was for fellow clarinetists to communicate and educate themselves and others, no matter what skill level or background. Why would you want to be so rude and demeaning to someone who you don't even know, who doesn't deserve it and did nothing to provoke it?

It seems as the administrator of these boards, you could be a little more welcoming. If you want your boards to be so exclusive, maybe you should have some type of screening process and not let people sign up who don't meet your criteria for someone worthy of posting here.

So, excuuuse me for taking up your precious bandwidth with my stupid post. It won't happen again.

I wrote to Lars Heuseler and asked for an explanation. He told me that the Amazon deal will begin at 7 am Pacific time today.

Also the email people got was not spam. Forestone sent an email update to every clarinet and sax player in the company's database. It didn't purchase any mailing lists.

Hope this clarifies the situation for you as it did for me.

It doesn't bother me one way or the other, but the original post probably would have been better received on Facebook or Twitter.

Curious. I don't remember letting them put me in their database. I have had a couple of emails back & forth, but nothing that I can remember asking me if I wanted to be in their advertising database. If it's their email contact list they used, they might want to consider not using that (I email lots of companies - I wouldn't want advertising from all of them all the time!), but moving to a real opt-in mailing list.

Come to think of it, I looked for an opt-out link in their email and didn't see one. Perhaps I missed it.

Well, I don't do Twitter, and none of my FB friends would have had a freakin clue what I was talking about, so I figured a clarinet board would be the place to ask about a clarinet product. Guess I was wrong.

Whew! Must be tempting to delete an entire thread sometimes. I guess we did (finally) find out the Forestone/ Amazon discount was legit, except; What is that code you have to enter??

The code is NEWERAFS, which Lars told me stands for New Era Forestones.

I just tried it and it works.

For some reason I did not receive an email from Forestone even though I ordered some recently...hmmm

Oh well, I will certainly make use of it and pass it along.

Let me be the first to offer you a big hug, and a hearty welcome to the Clarinet Bulletin Board!! We never would have heard about a decently priced Forestone without you.[grin]

Nasubi,

No worries. This board RARELY gets brutal. It's usually very family friendly. Don't get discouraged asking for questions on this board. I've gotten a few remarks that I considered rude in my posts, but if you power through it, you can get some pretty useful information.

Or better yet......post queries on the 'sax on the web' clarinet section. A great deal more friendly, non-judgmental and rarely self-absorbed.

I've never had a problem with questions on this BBoard. However, with somewhere near 335,000 postings now there should be some sort of mental filter involved before posting. In this case one very specific and needed piece of inmation was left out - that the OP had actually contacted the company - THAT tidbit made a difference. We read here time & time again "What are the materials/measurements/etc." of some product when the maker is readily available via email and is more than happy to discuss the REAL information rather than the misinformation I so often read here. I'd much rather read some new bit of information someone has accurately gathered rather than a question easily answered.

I have seen other BBs (including SOTW) get plenty abrasive as well. Maybe it is just a human nature thing. I wouldn't worry.

One of the best reasons to come over to this BB is that there are plenty of nice folks with a wealth of clarinet and music knowledge. Even with years of experience I still learn things here all the time.

Enjoy!

The replies from the OP were far more abrasive than Mark's posts. Perhaps the person living in a glass house should not cast stones.

I think we should all just get along (sarcasm can be very rude) and is definately not warranted after just one post asking a simple question!! I for one am very happy that Nabsubi77 posted his first post as I wasn't aware of the sale!! Thanks Nabsubi77!

Agreed; and in fact the deal is also available to Canada (take note Franklin) from the Amazon US site.

On another point: sarcasm from ordinary participants is one thing, but when the owner/moderator of the site engages in sarcasm that becomes the standard by which others strive to emulate. Not a standard that's particularly high.

I'm quite sure I've never done business with that company at all. Glad to know it's a genuine ad, not badware; but as far as I'm concerned, it's spam.

Oh boy,

I should have looked on this website a couple of days ago. I received the e-mail from Forestone and acted on it. The required code, NEWERAFS was at the bottom of the e-mail.

I immediately placed my order for ten clarinet reeds that Amazon had priced at a decent $21.95 each. By entering the code, the new price was $15.95. The shipping was only $3.00. I could have paid more for shipping, but the promised delivery date of 3 weeks was acceptable. I already have 8 reeds in rotation at the moment, but thought that this was an exceptional offer.

As to Amazon - I have dealt thru Amazon on many occasions with great success.

As to Forestone reeds. They are consistently terrific. I will never look back.

Take care,

Gene
